Registering as an Animal Health Technologist in Alberta
To become registered as an Animal Health Technologist (AHT) in Alberta, a person has to meet two requirements:
1. Graduated from a Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), or the American Veterinary Medical Association (AmVMA) accredited technology program
2. Successfully passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) (http://www.aavsb.org/VTNE/)

If the individual has not completed a CVMA or AmVMA accredited technology program but has graduated from a “non-accredited” technology program, or obtained education in a relatively equivalent field, opportunity also exists for them to submit their related credentials to be reviewed by a process that is currently administered by NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology).
NAIT AHT Equivalency Assessment Service: http://www.nait.ca/program_home_52396.htm
The contact for the AHT Assessment Service is Nichole Boutilier at Email: nicholeb@nait.ca or Phone: (780) 233-0472
Enrollment in the Assessment service would allow the individual to apply for “Provisional” AHT registration with the ABVMA (see ABVMA Bylaws 7.10A.8: http://www.abvma.ca/documents/BylawsoftheABVMAFebruary282010_001.pdf ), while completing the rest of the assessment.
After completing the NAIT “AHT Equivalency Assessment Service”, the individual would be eligible to apply to take the VTNE exam in Alberta. And, after successfully completing both the equivalency assessment as well as the VTNE would be eligible for full Active registration as an AHT in Alberta (RAHT).
