Welcome to the Veterinary Preceptorship
Program of Western Canada (VPPWC). Started in 1993 and jointly sponsored
by the four Provincial Veterinary Medical Associations and the Western
College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), this program is designed
to provide senior veterinary students with clinical and practical
experiences to complement their studies.
By participating in the program, you are committing to ensure that
a positive learning experience is provided for the student.
Some of these commitments are:
- Communicating in an open environment ensures that commitments
are fulfilled.
- Reading the "Terms of Reference" ensures an understanding
of the program.
- Signing the "Participating Contract" ensures that
you are abiding to the guidelines of the program.
- Discussing "expectations" at the beginning of the
program.
- Providing a positive learning environment for the student to
practise basic medical and surgical skills.
- Informing support staff of the program so that they are also
a positive part of the learning experience.
- Reviewing the evaluations with the student approximately every
4 weeks so that areas of concern (if any) may be addressed.
- Reviewing the evaluations with the student prior to completion
of the program.
- Forwarding completed evaluations expediently to the appropriate
Provincial Veterinary Medical Association office upon completion
of the program.
- The veterinarian will agree to provide the student with at least
a minimum level of remuneration. The Preceptorship Committee recommends
a basic remuneration of $2200/month (minimum provincial standards
may vary in each province).
